How I Got Started

I’ve been a runner for 46 years.  I started running when I was eight years old. Every Catholic growing up in St. Louis played soccer in the Fall.  It was suggested by my 2nd-grade soccer coach to run track because I kep tripping over my own legs in practice and games.  The coach thought that running would help me on the soccer field.  I didn’t want to run track in the Spring. I wanted to play baseball just like all my other friends did.  However, I wanted to make both my father and my coach happy because I loved soccer and figured that was the only way that they would continue to let me play.  After all, can’t be a good soccer player if you’re constantly tripping over yourself.

I fell in love with running.  I ran my first 5K at 8 and my first marathon at 10.  I ran high school and college cross country and track.

More importantly, I found how running made me feel.  It transformed me.  It became my passion.

And in case you're wondering, the only time I'm not tripping over my own two feet is when I'm running, so running did little to improve my soccer skills!
